Bear Vs. Shark By Chris Bachelder - 981 Words

Bear v. Shark, by Chris Bachelder states that entertainment dominates the life of America s society. More specifically, Bachelder portrays these on the computer-generated animals, the bear and the shark, who have brainwashed the culture of the Normans and the people in the United States. This paper will show the similarities and differences of the novel s portrayal of postmodern society to the world we live in today, and the fact where entertainment influences people to be obsessed with the technology and the products. In the United States, people are overpowered by the growth of the consumerism because of the material goods that reflect entertainment. In Bear v. Shark, Mr. Norman has been attached to the Vibra-Dream pillow. Bachelder states: â€Å"She (the pillow) doesn t care whether Mr. Norman used Visa or Mastercard... She (the pillow) just wants Mr. Norman to rest easy after a long day at the office† (Bachelder 17). It demonstrates that the Vibra-Dream pillow replaces his wife for it is always there to entertain him and make him more comfortable compare to Mr. Norman s wife, who is busy watching television all the time and does not have much time for her husband. In today s society, the most popular for adolescents’ drinks are alcohol or beers. The article states: â€Å"Further, few studies have focused on adolescents and alcohol advertisements where there is a great deal of sexuality and nudity. Alcohol is the most frequently advertise beverage in televised sports†

Analysis Of Keller s The Gospel And Work - 1893 Words

After Keller introduces and explains God’s original plan for work and what work has become after the fall of man, Keller comes to the final part of his writing: the Gospel and work. Keller explains that man always attaches a story line to their life. He relates the idea of a story to narratives, which becomes â€Å"a fundamental story about what human life in the world should be like, what has knocked it off balance, and what can be done to make it right.† (154) This narrative is important because everyone lives out a narrative. In addition, everyone acknowledges that there is something wrong within us and among us. Thus our worldview attempts to address these problems and identify what is the cause and what is the solution. Keller explains the†¦show more content†¦Christianity affects not only those areas of work, but all areas of work. While there is a new story for work, there is also a new conception of work. Keller explains that the reason why work done by Christians does not seem different from the work done by non-Christians is that work’s purpose is to serve our neighbor in the best possible way. Anyone could do this, thus it appears no different. Keller warns that Christians can be led to undervalue good work done by nonbelievers. What Christians must do is to â€Å"place a high value on all human work, done by all people, as a channel of God’s love for his world.† (182 Keller further explains that when acknowledging this information, this leads to the Christian theological idea of ‘common grace.’ Understanding common grace is important because without it, Christians will not be able to understand why non-Christians exceed them in many aspects. Through doctrine of sin, â€Å"believers are never as good as our true worldview should make us’ and the doctrine of grace s hows that â€Å"unbelievers are never as messed up as their false worldview should make them† (188) Keller concludes the chapter with a problem currently plaguing Christians: disengagement with popular culture. There are three forms: complete renunciation, creation of an alternate Christian subculture, and uncritical consumption of popular culture without worldview discernment. There are two causes: a thin or legalistic

Philosophy and Curriculum

Admittedly, education is always affected by the contemporary philosophy. For example, any teacher plans the curriculum in accordance with his/her opinion as for the main points and less important issues. Since teachers are brought up in a certain culture based on a particular philosophy they form their curricula in terms of this large context. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Philosophy and Curriculum specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Moreover, teachers tend to develop not only their students’ mental activity, but they strive to foster people characterized by the major values of the culture they pertain to. Of course, it is not the most important for teacher to teach students to do sums or know where human’s heart is. Teachers develop learners’ ethical qualities so that students become worthy members of the society. Thus, teachers try to shape their curricula so that not only student’s mind and brain but student’s soul and heart could be developed (Brummelen 2). Many educators pay much attention to the correlation between philosophy and curriculum. For instance, Brummelen provides many effective approaches to plan the curriculum in accordance with contemporary philosophy. To my mind, he helps not only teachers but students as well since he articulates many useful points which teachers can implement. As far as students are concerned they also benefit from reading such books since they start understanding the importance of this approach. Moreover, the book enables learners to focus on what is really important. What impressed me most was the attitude towards religion and its place in the curriculum. For instance, it is suggested that all disciplines can and should be integrated with major principles of religion (Brummelen 229). Of course, it is not surprising when religious issues are considered during History or Literature classes. However, I was a bit star tled while reading about using such principles during Biology or Physics, for example. I used to think that science and religion are in different camps since sciences always tried to debunk certain points promulgated by religion. In its turn religious people often denied some major findings of scientists or condemned them for interfering in some divine activities. Besides, I often disliked when teachers started moralizing, so I thought that any deviations from curriculum was useless waste of time. I thought that school should provide students with pure science. However, the book impressed me greatly and made me change my mind. Advertising Looking for essay on education? Moreover, to my mind some ethical norms are acquired better when they come within some particular discipline. Thus, now I admit that such integration is possible and even preferable. Whereas, nowadays teachers explain that people’s longing to knowledge and, in fact, ability to learn and perceive is given by our God. It goes without saying that contemporary students can benefit from knowledge which is accompanied by â€Å"guiding principle for life† (Anthony and Benson 375). To my mind, curriculum is only strengthened by philosophical (religious) principles. It is very important to make young people see what is right and what is wrong since they are exposed to so much information at present that they can easily get lost and make many mistakes. Thus, I gather that curriculum is, in any case, influenced by curriculum, so it is better if teachers know how to make students benefit from it. Works Cited Anthony, Michael J. and Warren S. Benson. Is Rhinocort OTC Different From Prescription Strength

Is Rhinocort OTC Different From Prescription Strength SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Rhinocort is a popular allergy medication, and it’s gone through several changes recently, which may leave you with some questions. Do you need a prescription to get Rhinocort, or is Rhinocort over the counter? Are there differences between prescription Rhinocort and Rhinocort OTC? How do you use Rhinocort? What should you know before taking it? Read on to get answers to all your Rhinocort questions. What Is Rhinocort? Rhinocort (also known as Rhinocort Aqua) is a nasal spray for people who suffer from allergies. The active ingredient in Rhinocort nasal spray is budesonide, which is a corticosteroid that helps prevent the release of chemicals that cause inflammation in the body. Rhinocort can help with both seasonal and year-round allergy symptoms such as a runny/stuffy nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, and a scratchy throat. There are versions of Rhinocort for both adults and children, and they should both provide about 24 hours of relief from allergy symptoms each time they are used. Can You Get Rhinocort Nasal Spray Over the Counter? Fortunately, you don’t need a prescription from your doctor to use Rhinocort; you can now get Rhinocort OTC. Rhinocort nasal spray used to only be available with a prescription, but in 2015 the FDA approved a version of Rhinocort for over-the-counter use. The OTC version of Rhinocort is technically known as Rhinocort Allergy, but it has the same active ingredients and strength as the prescription version of Rhinocort. The FDA tested Rhinocort OTC extensively to make sure it is just as effective as the prescription version was. Now that Rhinocort Allergy is available OTC, brand-name Rhinocort is no longer available with a prescription. However, you can still get generic budesonide nasal spray with a prescription (the generic version isn’t available over-the-counter). Since Rhinocort is now available over-the-counter, it’s also much easier to get it since you can just stop by a nearby store without needing to see a doctor to get a prescription first. However, OTC Rhinocort may now be more expensive now than it was when you needed a prescription, especially if you have good health insurance with low prescription deductibles. A bottle of Rhinocort OTC (with 120 sprays) will usually cost between $15 and $25. So, if your deductible for prescriptions was, say $10, you'll actually be paying more for Rhinocort now that it's over the counter Rhinocort Allergy is the third steroid nasal spray to go from being prescription-only to being available over-the-counter. The other two are Nasacort Allergy and Flonase Allergy Relief. Common Rhinocort Side Effects and Drug Interactions Rhinocort OTC is generally safe to take, but there are some important side effects and drug interactions you should be aware of. Talk to your doctor if you experience any serious side effects or if you’re taking a drug Rhinocort has a history of interacting with. More Common Rhinocort Side Effects Bloody nose Dry or sore throat Fever Cough Difficulty swallowing Tightness in chest In rare cases, Rhinocort can cause a serious allergic reaction. Contact your doctor or 911 immediately if your face/tongue/lips begin to swell or you have trouble breathing or swallowing. Rhinocort Nasal Spray Interactions Below are three of the most common interactions Rhinocort OTC can have with other medications. If you’re taking any of these, talk to your doctor before taking Rhinocort. Corticosteroids: Taking corticosteroids with Rhinocort can cause your corticosteroid medication to become ineffective and/or cause your body to not process the corticosteroid properly. This can cause the corticosteroid to build up to dangerous levels in your body. Dexamethasone: If you are taking dexamethasone (another anti-inflammatory drug) with lopinavir or telaprevir, Rhinocort can cause levels of lopinavir and telaprevir in your body to drop, making the dexamethasone drug not work as well. Radioactive iodide: Rhinocort can interact with radioactive iodide (usually taken for thyroid problems or thyroid cancer) and cause it to be less effective. You should also talk to your doctor before using Rhinocort if you’re pregnant, nursing, have eye problems such as glaucoma or cataracts, have a weakened immune system, and/or have recently had nose surgery or a nose infection. How Should You Take Rhinocort? Below are all the steps you need to take to use Rhinocort nasal spray properly. You can also find most of this information on the side of each Rhinocort OTC bottle. Before using Rhinocort, blow your nose and gently shake the bottle. Then, remove the plastic cap on the bottle, and close one nostril by pressing it with your finger. Tilt your head forward slightly, and insert the tip of the Rhinocort OTC bottle into your open nostril (keep the bottle upright). Push down on the pump once or twice depending on how many sprays of Rhinocort you want. Most people begin with one spray per nostril and increase it to two if they need a higher dose. After spraying, remove the applicator tip from your nostril and tilt your head back for several seconds for the spray to reach the back of your nose. Repeat with your other nostril. After you’re finished using Rhinocort nasal spray, wipe the applicator and replace the cap. Don’t blow your nose for at least 15 minutes after using Rhinocort. Conclusion: Rhinocort OTC Rhinocort is a nasal spray used by people who suffer from seasonal and year-round allergies. It helps reduce inflammation in the body which can prevent symptoms like a runny nose, itchy eyes, and congestion. Is Rhinocort over the counter? You used to only be able to get Rhinocort with a prescription, but in 2015, the FDA changed its regulations so that Rhinocort is now available over the counter. Rhinocort OTC has the same ingredients and effectiveness as the prescription version of Rhinocort. Rhinocort is generally safe to use, but it can have side effects such as a bloody nose, sore throat, and fever. To take Rhinocort, insert the applicator into one nostril, spray it one to two times, and repeat with the other nostril. Don’t blow your nose for at least 15 minutes after using Rhinocort.
